Maximum sentence for child abuse

A Gulfport man receives the maximum sentence for the felony child abuse of his nine-year-old stepson.

Thirty-five year-old Nathan Simmons changed his plea to guilty just prior to jury selection is his scheduled trial.

The victim told his sister and grandparents Simmons forced him to eat dog food, drink toilet water, and struck him in the genitals.

During the sentencing, the judge told Simmons he could not think of anything more despicable than what the defendant had done to the child.

Simmons will spend ten years behind bars without the eligibility for parole.
