Why are you seeking elective office?

I am a civic minded individual who is committed to giving back to my community. Because of my many years spent in the field of education and curriculum, I feel I will be able to add a unique perspective to Barnegat’s current board of education.

The single most pressing issue facing our (board, district, etc.) is _______, and this is what I intend to do about it.

Barnegat’s students’ State Test scores are in need of improvement. Test scores are a means to measure student achievement. Scores will not improve overnight – our 5 year strategy plan is a starting point. I plan to share my experience to ensure that Barnegat’s curriculum is
mapped to NJ State Standards, to ensure that our teachers are provided the tools needed to improve achievement and to increase targeted professional development opportunities for our teachers outside of our district as well as with-in our district especially in areas of need.

What are the critical differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post?

I am a fair-minded individual who works well in a group and has extensive educational experience in the area of curriculum development/implementation/coordination and finance work. I have practically spent my entire career successfully working with children and teachers in the field of education.

If you are a challenger, in what way has the current board or officeholder failed the community (or district or constituency)

I do not see myself as a challenger to the current board, I see myself as providing a missing
link to our current board. I am an experienced educator and I believe my years in education will add a perspective to the board that is currently missing. Student achievement as measured by test scores are in need of improvement – that is my expertise.

Describe the other issues that define your campaign platform.

In addition to improvement of student achievement, I intend to focus on other areas of need such as solving our reconfiguration problems, finding a solution to the unused Edwards School. I will work to ensure our tax dollars are spent responsibly by our district. I will look to find possible outside funding such as grants to enrich our district. I also will work to engage and inform our community in our schools by encouraging, providing and increasing Parental Workshops and Community On-Site Informational sessions.

What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job?

As Director of Curriculum and Master Math Teacher I had the opportunity to share my expertise to develop targeted teacher training and curricula coordination to lead a district school out of failing status. I led a team of administrators and staff in the Kearny School District to improve state test scores so that all schools met or exceeded state mandated standards. As a member of Barnegat’s BOE, I will have that opportunity once again to improve one of our areas of need.

The best advice ever shared with me was:

Treat others as you would have them treat you.

What else would you like voters to know about yourself and your positions?

I am an honest hard working person who has no personal agenda or motive other than a passion to help others whenever I can. I am a good listener who will weigh all sides of an argument before making a decision or casting a vote. I will work to improve Barnegat’s School District so that our children will receive the best education our township is capable of providing them and at the same time keeping our township’s fiscal health foremost in mind.
