BIG RAPIDS — Area residents spent Saturday morning walking through Hemlock Park to raise awareness about the issue of human trafficking during the city’s first Barefoot Mile Walk.

The event was sponsored by JOY International, a nonprofit organization which is committed to rescuing women and children who have been victim to the commercial sex trade.

Mary Smith, one of the volunteer organizers for the event, said she was glad to see participants from all over the area come together to end human trafficking.

She added she was grateful to all the local businesses who donated gifts for a silent auction.

Although some participants walked with bare feet, attendees did have the option to wear shoes.
