A student from Monte Alto High School was arrested last month for threatening to commit a “drive-by shooting” at a teacher’s home in Edcouch through a WhatsApp group chat with fellow students, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Raul Gonzalez, 19, was charged with making terroristic threats on May 25.

On May 19, a Hidalgo County Sheriff’s deputy spoke to a teacher who said she feared for her and her family’s safety after finding the messages between students, the affidavit said.

In the same group chat, named “only 1 official,” students spoke about knowing where to find guns to shoot up the home.

According to the document, investigators followed up with the teacher, who provided screenshots of the chat that showed Gonzalez threatening to do a drive-by at the teacher’s home and hurt her husband.

“[The teacher] stated she is alarmed by the threat and wishes to file charges,” the affidavit said.

On May 25, Gonzalez met with investigators at the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office where he was shown the screenshots. He admitted to sending the initial message about the drive-by, but said he was only joking, according to the affidavit.

Additionally, Gonzalez also admitted he mentioned he knew where to get guns.

Gonzalez was released on bond the day after his arrest.
