KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) – A Central Texas mother told KWTX the Douse Elementary School employee arrested by Killeen Police on Friday abused her disabled child.
“This happened two weeks after we started the school there and we have just been devastated. It’s just been very hard on our family,” said Ashley Flores.
Flores identified the teacher as K’Tanna Deering.
In a message sent to parents on Friday, Killeen ISD revealed the employee was placed on leave after the district received a complaint in November 2021 and “has not returned to our campus since.”
The nature of the complaint was not revealed by the district and it did not identify the employee.
Flores said her son came home from school with a bruise on his thigh and said Deering grabbed him because he would not sit down. “He showed me how someone had grabbed his thigh. He went like this and pressed down on his leg,” Flores said, “Fingerprints. Plain as day. Fingerprints.”
Killeen ISD on Friday acknowledged it has “worked to support the family and turned all information over to police to assist in their investigation.”
On Friday, January 21, 2022, the Killeen Police Department informed the school district that the employee surrendered to investigators after an arrest warrant connected to the original complaint was issued. The district said the case remains under investigation by the Killeen Police Department and “further personnel action may take place following the outcome of the legal proceedings.”
Deering is still listed as an employee on the school’s staff directory website.
