Not guilty pleas entered in child abuse case

Two people entered not guilty pleas to charges they allegedly abused a 12-day-old infant in June 2014.

Daniella Staggs, 25, and Kenneth Michael Ray Hunt, 25, both of Maysville entered their pleas Friday in Mason County Circuit Court.  The pair was indicted on the abuse charges on Jan. 23, by a Mason County grand jury.

Both have been assigned legal counsel through the Department of Public Advocacy and will be in court again on Feb. 13 at 1 p.m.

According to the indictment, between the dates of June 8 and June 20, the defendants committed the offense of second-degree criminal abuse when they abused the infant, resulting in a broken femur as well as bruising to the infant.

Hunt faces a second charge of second-degree persistent felony offender, related to a conviction on theft charges out of Lewis County in 2013.

According to court documents, Staggs is the non-custodial mother of five children, including the infant.

Both are incarcerated at Mason County Detention Center. Staggs is being held on a $5,000 cash bond, while Hunt hasn’t been assigned bond, according to Jail Tracker and court records.
