NRCC doubles down on attack of Malinowski lobbying for sex offenders | #predators | #childpredators | #kids

National Republican have launched a second TV ad based on a largely-debunked criticism that freshman Rep. Tom Malinowski lobbied against a national sex offender registry while heading the Washington office of Human Rights Watch in 2006.

The new National Republican Congressional Committee ad, “Damage,” alleges that Malinowski “led an effort:” to stop the law from being passed.

Script: Tom Malinowski doesn’t like to talk about his two decades in Washington, but pubic records prove Malinowski worked as the top lobbyist for a radical group that opposed the national sex offender registry because it would cause great harm to convicted sexual offenders.  Tom Malinowski led an effort to stop the law that lets you know if there is a child molester living on your street.  Defending sex offenders, putting us in danger.  NRCC is responsible for the content of this advertising.”

“Public record confirms Tom Malinowski was a high-paid DC lobbyist who worked on behalf of sexual predators and put New Jersey families at risk. It’s absolutely disgusting, and New Jersey voters deserve better.”

But individuals who worked at Human Rights Watch between 2003 and 2007 told the New Jersey Globe that Malinowski was not involved in lobbying against the creation of a national sex offender registry when he served as the group’s Washington director.

A 2007 report published by Human Rights Watch on sex offender laws in the United States acknowledged the participation of fourteen people affiliated with the organization as  taking part in the preparation and writing, including Carey and Fellner.  Malinowski’s name was not included.

The Washington Post fact-checked the first NRCC ad and gave it “four Pinocchios” – a rating awarded to a mostly-fall ad.

Malinowski ousted five-term Rep. Leonard Lance in 2018.  He faces Republican Thomas Kean, Jr., the minority leader of the New Jersey Senate.
