MANILA, Philippines–The Olongapo City Regional Trial Court has dismissed the case lodged against Ronnel Mas, a public school teacher who was arrested after posting on social media a P50-million bounty to anyone who can kill President Rodrigo Duterte.
In a 15-page decision, Olongapo City RTC Branch 72 Judge Richard Paradeza granted Mas’ motion to quash pursuant to Section 3 (c) Rule 117 of the Rules of Criminal Procedures (That the court trying the case has no jurisdiction over the person of the accused).
Mas, 25, a teacher of the Taltal National High School in Masinloc, Zambales was charged with inciting to sedition related to cybercrime.
“Considering that accused Mas had timely raised objection to the legality of his arrest before arraignment, and with the findings of this court that accused Mas was indeed unlawfully arrested, this court failed to acquire jurisdiction over his person,” the court said.
Mas, who was accompanied by his lawyers from the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) at the courtroom, was elated on hearing the decision.
