A 25-year-old motorist was killed and his passenger injured in a speed-related collision near the entrance to the campus of Mt. San Jacinto College, authorities said Thursday.
Jorge Paniagua of Hemet was fatally injured at 8:40 p.m. Wednesday at North State Street and Sagecrest Drive, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
Sgt. Dawn Blair said that the victim was driving an Infiniti sedan southbound on State “at a high rate of speed” when he encountered a northbound Honda Civic making a turn west onto Sagecrest.
The two vehicles collided, and the “force of the collision caused the Infiniti to (crash) into a telephone pole,” Blair said.
County fire department crews reached the location within a few minutes and pronounced Paniagua dead at the scene.
His passenger, whose identity was not disclosed, was taken to a hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries. That party’s condition was unknown Thursday.
The Honda driver escaped injury.
The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information was asked to contact the sheriff’s San Jacinto station at 951-654-2702.
