Pamplin Media Group – Clackamas County parenting program to offer classes in Spanish | #parenting

12-week course is geared for families with young children aged up to 8 years old this summer A group parenting program that for years was only available in English has been newly translated to Spanish and will be offered for the first time in Clackamas County to approximately 10 families with children aged 8 and below.

“Make Parenting A Pleasure” is a child-abuse-prevention program published by nonprofit family-support organization Parenting Now, providing highly-stressed parents of young children with mentoring in resiliency, social and emotional connection and other factors proven to lower the potential for neglect.

Parenting Now, headquartered in Eugene, is piloting the Spanish-language adaptation virtually in select sites and will launch the 12-week course in Clackamas County from June 9 to Aug. 25 in partnership with Clackamas Parenting Together, a region-wide network of support service providers for parents of young children.

“We’ve offered Make Parenting a Pleasure for years and years in English, and the publishing company was looking for some experienced facilitators and sites to do the new Spanish translation,” said Chelsea Hamilton, program planning director for CPT.

“We had a connection with a really strong facilitator and we knew that we would have Spanish-speaking families in our community who would want to take the class, so we jumped at that opportunity to be one of their first pilot and test sites.”

Through group dialogue around topics of self-care, stress and anger management, communication skills and positive discipline, the curriculum aims to empower families to “discover that they already possess the capabilities necessary to achieve their family goals,” according to the nonprofit’s website.

“Families who come not only get all of this really good information about those key parenting aspects, but they also get that connection with other parents who have a child similarly aged to theirs,” Hamilton said.

Hamilton said 10 families have already registered and the program has room for two more families to join. Families interested in participating can register online here. A program flyer is available here.
