We are welcoming patrons back into the library—for specific purposes and limited amounts of time. The doors are now unlocked so patrons do not have to ring the doorbell to enter. There are some rules to ensure that everyone stays safe and healthy.  Patrons may use the computers and copier, browse for books, or have something notarized. Only a limited number of people are allowed in the building at a given time.  Everyone must wear a mask over their nose and mouth and maintain social distancing guidelines.  There are wipes and gloves available as well. We want you to use the library, but we want you to be safe, too.  Our Saturday hours have changed; we are now open 11a.m.-3p.m.

Curbside pickup is still continuing even though we are open in a limited capacity.  If you would like to place an item on hold that we don’t own, holds between libraries has begun again.  You can log into your account with your library barcode and pin number and place the item on hold and it will get sent to us for you to pick up. You also can call the library to place items on hold. There are Google forms to fill out to request books if you don’t have specific titles in mind.  All the information is on our website (southplainfield.lib.nj.us/curbside.htm), and there are also written and video tutorials to help guide you in this process.  All items can be picked up Monday through Friday 10:15a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and staff will contact you when your items are ready to be picked up.  Any items you are returning must be put through the outdoor book and DVD return slots.  Please be aware that all returns are quarantined for 8 days before they are checked in. This means that items you have put in the book drop will still appear on your account for a week until they are checked in.  Starting on April 1, we are going to begin charging fines and fees again.  Items will be backdated a week from the day that they’re returned in the book drop, so please return items by their due date or call us for a renewal.

At home, please take advantage of all the online offerings from our library. Everything is free as long as you have your library card. Elibrarynj has been a popular source of e-books and audiobooks for many years, but we also have many other services that you can access from home. These all can be accessed through the library homepage.  Hoopla is one of the first you should explore.  Whether you connect online or through the app, you will find movies, music, audiobooks, e-books and comics for every taste and age group.  You can borrow up to five titles each month–without hold lists.  Many people can have the same title checked out at the same time.  You will need to create an account with an email address and password, but then you’re ready to go!

The library has a brand new resource, Kanopy!  Kanopy is a video streaming service that provides instant access to thousands of critically-acclaimed movies, inspiring documentaries, award-winning foreign films and kids favorites. Kanopy partners with studios like A24, The Criterion Collection, PBS and more to bring you access to thoughtful entertainment. You can search for specific titles, or browse the collection by subjects and genres. Kanopy also brings you The Great Courses series.  Each course is a series of lectures—always lavishly illustrated—from university professors and other experts.  The topics covered include the arts, history, travel and science.  There are also skills-based courses, such as yoga, photography and cooking. You get 8 play credits each month. Once you select a movie and press play, you have used a credit, but you get 3 days to watch that movie as often as you like. Stream on all your devices; Kanopy offers phone and tablet apps for iOS and Android. You can also access Kanopy on your computer or SmartTV . Young viewers will love Kanopy Kids, a special collection of movies and shows for children. There are features, classic storybooks and some of their favorite TV shows.  We offer unlimited plays in Kanopy Kids, so your kids are free to explore enriching, educational and entertaining videos. Explore and enjoy!  There are no ads or subscription fees. It’s all free with your library card.

If you want to watch some great movies and TV, try our new streaming services. Acorn TV offers the best of British television. Mystery lovers will enjoy Midsomer Murders, Vera, Poirot, Murdoch Mysteries and many more.  They also have comedies, dramas and documentaries, and new shows are added every week.  To start watching, follow the links from our home page to the RB Digital landing page. Once there you will need to create an RB Digital account.  The same account that gives you access to Acorn TV, will also allow access to IndieFlix (classic movies and TV), Method Test Prep and Qello (music and concert videos).  If you have used Qello, you can use the same RB Digital account. All of these are available (for free) on your computer, smart TV or any internet-enabled device.

If you miss coming to the library to read our variety of magazines, you can keep up to date on line.  Sign in to RB Digital with your library card to browse the electronic collection of magazines. There’s over 70 titles, so there should be something for everyone.
