#parent | #kids | Elton John ‘glad sociopath mum didn’t meet kids as she would’ve criticised them’

Sir Elton John has spoken out about his relationship with his late mother and revealed that she would have struggled with his children.

Elton’s mum, Sheila Farebrother, never met his two sons, eight-year-old Zachary and Elijah, six, who he shares with husband David Furnish.

Sheila died in 2017 and Elton said that she “never liked anybody” in a new interview with CBS Sunday Morning.

Opening up in the candid chat, 72-year-old Elton said: “She never liked David. She never liked anybody. She never asked to see the children. But I’m glad they didn’t meet her, because she would have criticised them, like she criticised me.”

Elton added: “She couldn’t help herself. She’s a sociopath.”

Despite reconciling before she died, Elton said that nothing changed in the their relationship.

The legendary singer continued: “The only thing that changed was I didn’t lose my temper.

“I knew what was coming, and I let her get on with it. And I just said, ‘I love you, Mum,’ and she said, ‘I love you, too. I don’t like you, but I love you. But I don’t like you.’”

When it came to regrets in life, Elton said that trying and then getting hooked on cocaine in 1974, was his main one.

He said that after taking it for the first time, he was sick but that didn’t stop him from coming back for more.

Elton admitted: “It nearly destroyed my soul.

“My soul was black, like a charred piece of steak, until I said, ‘I need help.’ And suddenly a little pilot light in my soul came along going, ‘Yes, I’m still here. I’m still here.’”

It has been 29 years since Elton ‘cleaned up’ and he revealed that he had written his memoir, Me, to help his sons understand the truth about his life.

Elton continued: “I wanted my boys to know what I was like and what happened, so that when I’m not here, they can read the book and read the truth.

“I just want them to understand what I was like when I went through the journey I had before I had them. How they made my life complete.

“How they’ve, you know, finished the circle. And that, you know, they were the last chapter in an incredible life.”
