#parent | #kids | Meet Daisy – the school worker who is ‘happier and healthier’ after losing more than three-and-a-half stone

A school worker from Talke has shed over-three-and-a-half stone in a year, dropped three dress sizes and fallen in love with yoga.

Daisy Ashton joined the Rode Heath Slimming World group in January 2020, and within a year she hit her target and lost 3st 8lbs.

Daisy – who works with children at a special educational needs school – has shared her tips for success when losing weight with coeliac disease.

When she was diagnosed in 2019, the 29-year-old knew she wanted to lose weight, but didn’t know how to navigate her new dietary needs.

Thanks to the support of her Slimming World group and consultant, Daisy dropped from a size 16 to a size 12 and is now happier and healthier – and looking forward to turning 30 whilst feeling like her ‘old self’.

Daisy explained: “In 2019 I was diagnosed with coeliac disease, so I was trying to come to terms with what I could and couldn’t eat, and it was really hard at first.

“I knew I had to make a change because I was putting weight on and was generally really unhappy.

“I’d done Slimming World before, and it worked for me, so I decided to give it a go again.

“I’d lost about a stone at the start of lockdown, and just I thought to myself, ‘I can either stick to this now and lose weight, or not stick to it and be miserable.’

“Without the Zoom groups I think I would have found it really hard to stay on track. Everyone is in the same boat and everyone just wants to help each other hit their goals. That kind of support is so good to have when you’re on your journey.

“It’s such a social thing too. My mum also goes to the same group as me, so I got to see her virtually, as well as my Slimming World friends and consultant Julie.

“Julie is amazing and so supportive and friendly. I’ve done Slimming World a couple of times before and never got to target, but with Julie, I did.”

Daisy quickly realised that by cooking from scratch, she was able to control what went into her food, and keep things both coeliac disease and Slimming World-friendly.

“I’m allergic to gluten, and you don’t realise how many things have gluten in them, like sausages and gravy.

“Because I follow Slimming World, I cook almost everything from scratch, so it means that everything is really fresh, and I know exactly what’s going into my meals.

“I have been experimenting more and cooking new things, as well as adapting my old favourite meals. Sometimes it only takes a few simple tweaks to make them healthier and gluten free.

“Every week I make a chicken and bacon pie with mash on top – and another staple for me is fish and rice.”

Daisy is now happier and healthier after losing weight

Despite losing weight, Daisy still enjoys regular treats, or ‘syns,’ as Slimming World calls them. She also found a love for yoga during lockdown – and finds it a great way to relax her body and mind.

“During the day I tend to snack on fruit and veg, but sometimes in the evening all you want is a hot chocolate, or a bad of crisps, so I love having my syns for that.

“You can have a little bit of whatever you want, just in moderation. If you want a glass of wine at the weekend, or a bar of chocolate, you can still have that with Slimming World.

“I love taking my two little dogs for walks, and in the first lockdown I joined in with the Joe Wicks PE sessions, but once I went back to work a few days a week, that went out the window. When I’m at work I always get my steps in though as I’m running around after the kids.

“Yoga is my favourite thing to do, and I find it’s great for my mental health too. I love all of the stretches, and I find it so relaxing for both my body and mind.

“I think you just have to do what suits you in terms of exercise. Everyone is so different and the plan works either way.”

Daisy says she now feels more ‘in control’ of her coeliac disease, and her new dress size has meant that she is buying more clothes than ever before.

“I have so much more energy since losing the weight, and my health has really improved. I feel much more in control of my coeliac disease and find it so much easier to manage.

“I find it so much easier to chase after the kids at work now, and my mental health is so much better – I feel like my old self.

“When I go to buy clothes, I have to remind myself that I’m no longer a 16, because it does take time to get used to. Sometimes you do feel like you’re still the size you were when you were bigger.

“My biggest tips for new members would be to stay to group – whether that’s online or in person – and write everything down.

“You have to still go out and enjoy your life, but it’s about making better choices, and swapping things like chips for a jacket potato, or a salad.

“Always remember why you started and think about those things to keep you motivated. One of the reasons I joined Slimming World was because I had a big Disney holiday planned to Florida – which has sadly been cancelled twice – and I wanted to feel good for that.

“With Slimming World you can still enjoy all of your treats, it’s not restrictive at all. Anyone can do it, you just have to go for it.”
