Parents and grandparents will be surprised to learn that they may be the drug dealer for local teens. Teen abuse of prescription drugs and over-the-counter cough medicine is becoming frighteningly common.
Prescription and over-the-counter cough medicine abuse by teens is second only to marijuana use. According to the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids, almost one in four teens in the U.S. admitted to prescription drug abuse; approximately one in 25 gets high on over-the-counter cough medicine.
Prescription drug abuse is defined as taking medication prescribed for someone else or taking your own prescription in a way not intended, usually to get high. Teens abuse prescription drugs and cough medicine because they are cheap, easy to get, and they think they are safer than street drugs, like heroin or cocaine.
