NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. (WFLA) – A Pasco County high school student was hospitalized and another is facing a felony charge following a fight at school on Wednesday.

The fight between the two students happened at River Ridge High School. Video of the fight shows the two in fighting stances in an outdoor hallway, reported local NBC affiliate WFLA.

The first punch that landed sent one of the students to the ground, and the one who threw the punch, 17-year-old Kevin Smith, followed up with additional blows.

Smith ended the fight by violently stomping on the other student’s head, reported WFLA.

The kid that was on the ground then started having a seizure-like reaction. Students that were surrounding the fight were laughing and making comments.

The injured student was airlifted to a nearby hospital, but the Pasco Sheriff’s Office said the hospitalization was only done as a precaution. Deputies said the student is alert and speaking with investigators.

Smith was detained by deputies and is facing a felony battery charge.

River Ridge High School released the following statement:

“Parents and Students,

This morning we had an altercation between two students that resulted in the injury of one student who was airlifted. We are always focused on a safe campus and will continue to work to ensure all students are safe. The Sheriff’s office is involved and investigating the situation.”
