The ESSER grants were given to the Department of Education through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act passed back in March. The CARES Act provides states with direct funding to address the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on school districts in every state. Each district’s total amount is based on the amount of Title 1 funding that the district receives from the federal government.
“We know our students and educators have had a difficult year,” Governor Phil Murphy said back in February.
“Providing our school communities with increased flexibility and support is essential to move our education system forward. The additional federal funds will allow districts to best meet the individual needs of their students during this challenging time.”
