Police bust child porn ring with 87,000 members who arranged horrific abuse of children and swapped vile images online

German police have busted a child porn website with 87,000 members and arrested a man they accuse of running it.
Officers detained the 39-year-old, who has not been identified, north of Frankfurt. Several suspected users were arrested across Germany and Austria
They are all accused of involvement in a forum called Elysium, which had operated on the ‘Darknet’ since the end of 2016.

The website was used for the worldwide exchange of child pornography and to make appointments for the sexual abuse of children, prosecutors said.
“Among the child pornographic images and video files exchanged by the members of the platform were recordings of the most serious sexual abuse of children, including toddlers and depiction of sexual violence against children,” it said.

The suspected operator was arrested on June 12 when police raided his apartment and seized the server of the platform.
The statement did not say how many people had been arrested in total, adding that more details of the case would be made available at a news conference on Friday.
The Darknet is an area of the internet accessible only through special internet browsers which make their users anonymous, meaning their activities cannot be traced.

A large part of the Darknet consists of marketplaces where users can pay for anything from drugs and guns, to assassinations and human organs.
The most infamous Darknet site was perhaps Silk Road, run by Ross William Ulbricht, which operated between 2011 and 2013.
It was eventually shuttered and Ulbricht was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
A successor, Silk Road 2.0, sprang up shortly after but was again closed in 2014 with the arrest of Blake Benthall, the alleged mastermind behind it.
