A wife and husband were charged with felony child abuse after authorities said they struck a teen repeatedly with an electrical cord, Prince William County police said Monday.
The couple, identified by police as De’Mari Jahnessa Brannam, 25, and Laren Keiyon McMillian, 26, both of Woobridge, were also charged with cruelty and injuries to a child after the July 31 assault.
Authorities said the assault happened just before 9:11 p.m. following a verbal argument between a 14-year-old girl and Brannam in Woodbridge. During the argument, police said, Brannam struck the girl’s body multiple times with the cord. At some point, McMillian also hit the girl in the face with the cord, according to a police department news release.
The girl, who was known to the married couple, had lacerations and welts on her body after the assault, the release said.
