STATESVILLE, N.C. — Sheriff’s officials says five children were found living in filth along with their parents and the body of their dead grandfather.
Deputies haven’t identified the grandfather but say they found the 62-year-old man’s body in the home Friday evening. Deputies said the man had been dead at least 24 hours.
The sheriff’s office calls the conditions extremely unsanitary and described a scene with large amounts of trash, dirty clothes and food on the floor in the living area. Plumbing leaks and raw sewage were found in the bathrooms.
DSS has taken custody of the children, whose ages range from 9 months old to 13 years. One of the children did not belong to either suspect.
Police arrested the parents, 25-year-old Melissa Kay Lynn Poole and 39-year-old Jeremy Daniel Dishner, and charged them with five counts of misdemeanor child abuse. Dishner was also wanted on an outstanding warrant in Alexander County for driving without a license. Both have been released on bond.
