Polk deputies investigate death of child porn suspect

Polk County sheriff’s homicide detectives are conducting a death investigation of 56-year-old David Wayne Cahill of Lakeland.

Polk County sheriff’s computer crimes detectives responded to Cahill’s home in the 6100 block of Andrea Drive to execute a search warrant for possession and distribution of child pornography about 12:30 p.m. Sunday, authorities said.

Deputies learned someone at the residence downloaded and distributed 10 files containing images of prepubescent girls, between the ages of 7 -10 years of age, in varying stages of undress, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

When deputies went to the house with a search warrant to look for additional child pornography, no one came to the door.

Deputies entered the house, where they found Cahill’s wife, Nell, who was reluctant to leave the residence. As Nell Cahill was being escorted from the home, deputies heard the sound of a single gunshot from the master bedroom.

When they entered the bedroom, Cahill was found inside the closet with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to his chest, the sheriff’s report states. A handgun was found nearby.

Cahill was pronounced dead on the scene.

Deputies found dozens of portable thumb drives, several computers and electronic devices in an office in the house, the report states. Nell Cahill told detectives her husband was in the office when the deputies arrived.

Deputies learned David Cahill kept the computers and electronic equipment in his office. During a preliminary review of the electronic equipment, law enforcement officers located 12 child pornographic images on Cahill’s main computer. That brought the total to 22 child pornographic images located in the investigation, so far.

Detectives located more than 330,000 files on the same computer, which have not been reviewed.

The investigation continues.
