Poquoson High athletics volunteer arrested on child porn charges

Deputies arrested a Poquoson High School football volunteer on ten child pornography charges Wednesday afternoon.

Robert Rollins, 55, is being held without bond in the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.

The arrest came after agents with the Internet Crimes Against Children program began investigating a tip last Thursday, according to Lieutenant Dennis Ivey with the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office. Investigators traced child pornography images back to an IP address at Rollins’ home on Hunts Neck Road, Ivey said.

Rollins served as a volunteer statistician for Poquoson’s high school football team, according to Poquson City Schools superintendent Dr. Jennifer Parish. The school system also paid him to run the clock at some basketball and volleyball games. He had been employed as a maintenance man from 1987 to 1996, and during that time, also served as a volunteer assistant coach, Parish said.

He would have had to clear a background check before the school hired him in 1987, according to school policy. In his most recent position as a volunteer statistician, Rollins would have never been alone with students, but he was “visible on the sidelines at games,” Parish said.

“He really didn’t have any interaction with students in those roles,” said Poquoson High School principal Brandon Ratliff. “He didn’t do any kind of teaching or coaching or supervising.”

Ratliff said the school did not send any notification about Rollins’ arrest to parents.

“At this point, there is no need for that. He wasn’t a coach on the team. Again, we’re looking at something that is a very minimal impact with the kids,” Ratliff said. “Any questions that we would get, individually from parents or students, we obviously would talk to them or answer anything they had but anything in a mass capacity we’re not going to do.”

Investigators are not ruling out the possibility that local children were allegedly victimized, but Ivey said they had so far not heard from any Poquoson High School students or parents.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office at (757) 890-3630.

Legal representation for Rollins will be determined at his next court hearing September 24. He denied an interview request from the jail, according to deputies.

Rollins will no longer be allowed to work or volunteer with Poquoson City Schools, according to Parish.
