The teacher’s father and two uncles were also arrested in the case filed under the Prevention of Women and Child Repression Act

Police have arrested a teacher of Sylhet’s Leading University, along with three other family members, for torturing his wife over dowry.

The arrestees are – the teacher, Ashraful Islam Chowdhury, 33, his father Abul Kalam Chowdhury, 55, from Chittagong’s Lohagara upazila, and his uncles Md Nazim Uddin, 50, and Md Mansur Alam, 48m, from Chittagong’s Satkania upazila.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) SM Abu Farhad confirmed the arrest of the four and said they were sent to jail through the court.

According to police, a team led by Sub Inspector Md Rezaul Karim, in-charge of Lama Bazar police outpost, arrested them from a rented house in Sylhet city’s Kewapara area early Wednesday.

Earlier, the teacher’s wife filed a case under the Prevention of Women and Child Repression Act with Kotwali Model police station.

Citing the case statement, SI Md Rezaul Karim, the investigating officer of the case, said Ashraful Islam Chowdhury is working as an assistant professor in the business administration department of Leading University.

He got married in 2016. Shortly after the marriage, he began to abuse his wife physically and mentally. At one stage, his father and uncles came to Sylhet from Chittagong and got involved in torture. 

Ashraful and his family members also demanded a dowry of Tk15 lakh on various pretexts. Whenever his wife expressed the inability pay the dowry, she was subjected to physical and mental torture.

After trying to resolve the issue for a long time, the wife finally filed the case against them, he added.
