Professor T BritBox: New Ben Miller crime drama filmed in Cambridge to air on BritBox tonight | #College. | #Students

The dreaming spires of Cambridge are again the backdrop for a new prime time TV drama, starring Ben Miller as a Cambridge University professor and crime-solver.

Professor T launches exclusively on BritBox today, June 3, ahead of its ITV release later this summer.

Based on a hit Belgian series of the same name, the six-part drama is available to watch on the BBC and ITV subscription service.

And what’s more, there are sure to be plenty of familiar sights after filming crews were spotted in the city last autumn.

On the launch of the new show, Miller said: “Professor T has it all: intriguing murders, dreaming spires, and a cast of unforgettable characters, each with their own fascinating secrets.

“You don’t have to be a professor of criminal psychology to know the ITV audience will love it.”

Who’s in the cast?

Ben Miller, of Johnny English, Death in Paradise, and (more recently) Bridgerton fame plays Jasper Tempest, a Professor of Criminology at Cambridge University.

He is obsessed with cleanliness, structure, and order but his genius for solving crimes means he is constantly having to get his hands dirty, helping the police to crack their most difficult cases.

The magnificent Frances de la Tour (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, The History Boys) plays Jasper’s colourful, but overbearing mother, Adelaide.

While Emma Naomi (also Bridgerton, The Trial of Christine Keeler) is Detective Inspector Lisa Donckers and rising star Barney White is her police sidekick Dan Winters

Also joining the cast are The Salisbury Poisonings actor Andy Gathergood, Quiz star Sarah Woodward, Marcella’s Ben Onwukwe, Downton Abbey’s Douglas Reith, and Van Der Valk actress Juliet Aubrey.

Frances de le Tour plays Adelaide Tempest, the detective’s mother. Pictured here in a Cambridge college court.

Where was it filmed in Cambridge?

Cambridge is practically a co-star too, by the looks of things.

“Visually, it is appealing, because Cambridge is appealing,” read a Sunday Times review.

Jesus College is recognisable in some publicity shots, and others take in the full glory of Cambridge’s architectural skyline from a rooftop location, while Professor T looks contemplative.

What happens in the first episode?

The opening episode finds the professor unwillingly acting as an adviser to the police when Diana Tyson (Elizabeth Kate Back) is violently attacked on the university campus where he has tenure.

Det Insp Lisa Donckers suspects that the assault is very similar to one that occurred years before and, having been a previous student of Professor T’s, she thinks he can help.

The series is directed by leading Belgian director Dries Vos, produced by Robin Kerremans and Dimitri Verbeeck, and executive produced by Eagle Eye production company creators Walter Iuzzolino and Jo McGrath.

Iuzzolino said: “Professor T is my all-time favourite detective – a tortured genius wrestling with a mystery childhood trauma.

“It’s a unique crime series with a core of wonderful warm characters at its heart and I am delighted to be working with our hand-picked European production team to make this for ITV and international audiences.”
