RANDOLPH, NJ- The Board of Education interviewed four candidates, Andrew George, Peggy Kurtz, Vernetha Powell, and Nicholas Caruso to fill the unexpired term of a board member who recently resigned, Robert Soni. The Board of Education voted to appoint Vernetha Powell. After undergoing a state mandated background check, Vernetha Powell will be sworn in and serve through the Organization Meeting in January 2022.
Ms. Fano gave an update on the process for filling the high school principal vacancy and recommended Director of Secondary Education Jonathan Olsen as Interim Principal. The Board of Education approved the appointment of Mr. Olsen as Interim Principal while the district completes its interview process. “We are happy that we were able to reopen our schools. I am extremely proud of our teachers, students, support staff members, and parents. Hybrid instruction is not easy, but it is the model of instruction we are navigating and doing so successfully after the first nine days.
Some teachers have shared that while they may be tired, they are happy to be teaching their students and even becoming more comfortable teaching a small fraction of their students in person, while also teaching the other students from their classroom computer. Our teachers, education specialists, and support staff members have been doing an exceptional job and we appreciate the support of the community as well. “It truly does take a village…”
We continue to evaluate our plans for what our next phase may look like as more information becomes available. We look forward to when we will be able to extend the length of the school day, or to bring back all students. At this time, we are not able to implement any changes to our schedule or expand the capacity for the number of students in person which must continue to ensure 6” of social distancing.
Marking Period 2 begins November 16 and all parents who choose for their child to participate virtually for the entire second marking period must complete the form in Genesis between October 16-30.”

Assistant Business Administrator Stephen Frost gave an update on food service and childcare:
· Meals are being delivered three times each week to all students who place orders.
· Order forms go out every two weeks for the following two weeks via email.
· Meals are charged to the student’s MyPaymentsPlus account.
· Students who qualify for free/reduced lunch can select a breakfast and lunch entrée each day at no cost.
· All families who may qualify are encouraged to submit applications for free/reduced lunch
. Carryover of those who qualified last year expires on October 16.
· Meals are available for staff and athletes each day.
· The district noted in July that the decision to offer childcare would be continually re-evaluated.
· The district is exploring the feasibility of offering childcare beginning sometime in the second marking period.
· Childcare will not be offered prior to January 2021.
· A survey will be released soon to determine potential program interest.
· Health, safety, and education will remain the district’s top priority.
The Board of Education held a hearing for an amendment to Superintendent Jennifer Fano’s contract. Board of Education President Tammy Mackay issued a statement regarding that amendment which is available on the district’s website. The Board of Education approved the amendment to Ms. Fano’s contract.
