Joe Vitale, the secretary of the board of education at Croswell-Lexington Community Schools, will be resigning from the board, effective July 1.
“I found it to be a rewarding experience because I graduated from Cros-Lex and my kids went there,” Vitale said. “It was more than a job to me. It was like helping my family, that family being Cros-Lex.”
Vitale is resigning because he no longer lives in the school district. The Michigan Association of School Boards rules state people must live in the school district to serve on the board of education. Vitale now resides in Port Huron.
He was appointed to the board in 2016 to fill a vacancy. Vitale was elected to the board in 2018 to serve a six-year term.
“I hope someone will take the reins and put their energy in helping our school district,” he said.
The school board is now seeking applicants to fill the vacant seat. To be eligible, people must be at least 18, a registered voter, a resident of Michigan for at least 30 days and a resident of the school district.
This does not mean the applicant will get the position of secretary. Rather, they will get a board seat. According to Vitale, the board is most like to reorder themselves to fill the secretary position until board elections in November.
“I’m one of those people that don’t like to complain from the sidelines,” Vitale said. “I want to be a part of the solution.”
He said he will miss the comradery he had with the other board members. He will also miss having a voice and being an advocate for his community.
“I took that oath very strongly that if the community was looking for something, or a change was needed, I would be their advocate,” he said. “I wasn’t afraid to speak my mind when implementing a change or proposing something.”
Applications for the board position are due by 3 p.m. July 1.
Applicants must send in a letter of interest and a filled-out questionnaire created by the board.
Both must be sent to Katie Gordon, the board of education president, 5407 E. Peck Road, Croswell, MI 48422. People can find the application and questionnaire through the school’s website.
