SOMERVILLE – A Rutgers Preparatory School teacher and coach, accused of having sex 10 times with a 17-year-old student with whom he said he was in love, has been released from the Somerset County Jail pending the resolution of the charges against him.

Matthew J. Rennie, 27, of the Ringoes section of East Amwell, was arrested Oct. 6 and charged with second-degree sexual assault and third-degree endangering the welfare of a child.

Superior Court Judge Anthony Picheca released Rennie on a “substantial” number of conditions following a detention hearing Wednesday morning.

Rennie, who will reside with his parents in North Brunswick, is ordered not to have any contact with the alleged victim or her family, report to the court’s pre-trial services department once a week, have no contact with any female under the age of 18, have no contact with his co-defendant – fellow Rutgers Prep teacher and coach Ranait Griff – and undergo a psychological evaluation.
