LAKE RONKONKOMA, NY (OnSachem.com / OnTownMedia.com) — Sachem Schools reached a pandemic milestone this week no one wants to celebrate. The district hit the 1,000-mark for COVID-19 infections since schools reopened last September, with over 20% of those virus cases reported during the past month.

Nine positives reported Tuesday brought Sachem Central School District to 1,001 infections, affecting 801 students and 200 teachers and staff during the school year.

Among Sachem’s 15 schools, the two high schools have been hardest hit this year. Sachem High School North in Lake Ronkonkoma reported 226 positives, followed by 194 cases at Sachem High School East in Farmingville. In Holbrook, Seneca Middle School reached 91 infections as of Tuesday, the most to date among the district’s three middle schools. Positives have also affected all 10 elementary schools, especially Lynwood Avenue Elementary School in Farmingville, where there have been 59 infections to date.

The past four weeks revealed virus spread is not slowing. Sachem had 216 infections from March 8 to April 5, which accounted for over 20% of positives since schools opened seven months ago.

Meanwhile, as a sign of progress amid the pandemic, Sachem is scheduled to welcome back students in grades 7, 9, and 10 to full-time in-person learning as of April 12. The three grades make up the third and final phase to bring 6th to 12th graders back to school face-to-face every day, ending hybrid learning which had students alternating daily between going to the classroom and remote teaching at home.
