#schoolsafety | Five-star safety Xavier Nwankpa caps off high school career with Class 5A State Championship victory

What a high school career for Southeast Polk 2022 five-star safety Xavier Nwankpa.

Nwankpa, one of the most talented players to ever play high school football in the state of Iowa, capped off his high school career on Friday night by leading Southeast Polk to its first state championship in football.

The Rams took down Ankeny, 24-7, inside the UNI-Dome. Nwankpa entered Friday night’s game with 29 receptions, 366 yards, and five touchdowns on offense. On defense, Nwankpa recorded 24 tackles, one tackle for a loss, one sack, and four interceptions, including one last night against the Hawks.

“At 6’2.5 and 199 pounds he has excellent size to go along with an athletic build and solid wingspan,” 247Sports’ Chris Singletary wrote of Nwankpa. “He is able to bend with loose hips that allow him to get in and out of his breaks. The burst and closing speed that he has makes for a player that displays great range whether it’s getting off the hash in 2 deep or in the deep third to make plays on the ball or receiver. The ability to read, react and close on plays are something that makes him a game-changer. His tackling is and physicalness is top-notch, he coils and strikes the ball-carrier along with doing a good job wrapping. Makes plays on all three levels, does a good job when blitzing being physical and running through blockers or attacking their edge while making plays on the QB. In the slot or as a nickel backer he can cover and make plays on the ball along with being a factor in the run game. On the back end he can scan the field and be a ball-hawk whether its in the alley or over the top. Very talented player that’s going to be factor in the defense along with having 4 core ability as a special teams player. Multi year power 5 starter that has the skill set to be an All-Conference performer an a early round draft pick.”

With his high school career behind him, Nwankpa will now focus on a final decision. Nwankpa, the nation’s top safety, is down to Iowa, Ohio State, and Notre Dame. The Hawkeyes have picked up recent buzz on the 247Sports Crystal Ball, but Notre Dame and Ohio State still seem to be threats in this recruitment. The Notre Dame staff was two-deep for Nwankpa’s state championship game on Friday night.

Here is 247Sports’ most recent update with Nwankpa, who will announce his decision on Dec. 8 (VIP).

Nwankpa is listed as the nation’s top safety on 247Sports. Nwankpa will finish his high school career in the 2022 All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas in January.
