#schoolshooting | Teen in critical condition after Northwest Side shooting

Updated

A teenager is in custody after a shooting on the Northwest Side left a 15-year-old in critical condition Friday morning, according to San Antonio police.

Police responded to the Plaza DeVille apartments, located at 5907 Eckhart Road, for a shooting in progress.

The 16-year-old’s parents were in the apartment at the time of the shooting and told police they heard a pop and then a door close before going to investigate the noises, said SAPD spokeswoman Jennifer Rodriguez.

When the parents went into their son’s bedroom, they found him suffering from a gunshot wound. The suspected 17-year-old shooter, who was friends with the victim, had fled the scene, according to SAPD.

He later returned to surrender to police, Rodriguez said.

The weapon used was also recovered, though police didn’t reveal what kind of weapon it was. The parents told police they don’t know where the gun came from. Police said they didn’t know who owned the firearm.

The shooter was detained and has been transported for questioning. Officials haven’t determined if the incident was an accident. No charges have been filed as of yet, but the shooter could be tried as an adult if charges go through, Rodriguez said.

Police also haven’t determined why the two teenagers weren’t in school at the time of the incident.
