Scotch Plains-Fanwood Board of Education Releases Plan to Return to Hybrid Learning | #Education

SCOTCH PLAINS-FANWOOD–  Following the all-virtual start of the school year, superintendent Dr. Joan Mast and the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Board of Education (BOE) have put together a phased-in reopening process with the following schedule is planned for the hybrid instruction plan:

  • Pre-K will begin hybrid instruction on Oct. 22, 2020
  • K – 1st grade will begin hybrid instruction on Oct. 26, 2020
  • 2nd – 5th grade will begin hybrid instruction on Nov. 9, 2020
  • 6th – 12th grade will begin hybrid instruction on Nov. 16, 2020

In a letter sent to the parents on Thursday afternoon, Dr. Mast outlined the plans to proceed with a hybrid learning system and provided an update on the district’s ventilation systems by the firms E.I. Associates and Environmental Safety Management Corporation. The findings of these reports provided the data necessary to continue to remediate in order to ensure that all school buildings are safe for the return of students and staff as described in Governor Murphy’s Executive Order 175.

Below is the District-wide Ventilation Assessment Summary:

* Please note that Nov. 3, 2020 is Election Day, which this will be a virtual learning day for all grades.

The district is following the hybrid model originally presented in August in the District Restart Plan on pages 35-39. In the hybrid model, teachers will be teaching two groups of students simultaneously, one group at home and one group in the classroom.

As work toward the next phase continues, the BOE has asked parents to complete the Return to School Survey by Monday, Oct. 12, 2020. Dr. Mast says that this survey is critical for scheduling students in groups and coordinating groupings with sibling assignments. Families will still have the choice for their child to continue with the virtual model. Further, if the hybrid model is chosen, and parents would like to return their child to virtual-only instruction, they may do so at any time.

Conversely, parents who choose the virtual model will have the opportunity to switch to hybrid at the following times:

  • Elementary: Dec. 11 (End of Trimester)
  • High School and Middle School: Dec. 16 (Marking Per. 2 Progress Reports)
