Four years ago, I called Sen. Rob Portman and encouraged him not to vote to confirm Betsy DeVos as U.S. secretary of education, given her lack of qualifications for the position. I was told by Mr. Portman’s staff that he defers to the president in these situations. Now, four years later, Mr. Portman apparently forgot that he defers to the president for these decisions, as on May 25, Mr. Portman was a “Nay” vote to confirm Kristen Clarke to lead the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, despite Ms. Clarke being more than qualified for the position. (She was confirmed 51-48, with Sen. Susan Collins of Maine the only Republican supporting her confirmation.)
Mr. Portman, you have stated that you are not seeking re-election due to the current hyperpartisan politics in Washington, but your voting record would suggest that you are part of the problem.
