The Sigma Lambda chapter of Kappa Delta at Auburn University will host the 22nd annual Shamrock 5K Run to raise funds and awareness for the prevention of child abuse on Saturday, Feb. 28.
The race will begin promptly at 8 a.m. at Willow Hall in The Village dorms on Auburn’s campus, and it will finish on West Thach Avenue, across from the FarmHouse fraternity house.
The Sigma Lambda chapter had a speaker from Prevent Child Abuse America’s Montgomery location talk to them last semester, raising its awareness on the subject.
“This one girl who was 15 years old had been raped by a family member, and I didn’t realize until that point that for a lot of people who get abused, it’s by a brother or close family member,” said Anna Abernathy, vice president of public relations for the chapter.
“Just thinking about the psychological damage that that would do at such a young age — that just got me really upset. But at the same time, it got me encouraged and excited to do everything I could do to promote this event.”
The run is the Sigma Lambda chapter of Kappa Delta’s largest philanthropy event of the year, with last year’s race raising $21,000.
Twenty percent of the funds will go toward Prevent Child Abuse America, and the remaining 80 percent will go to the local organization, LeeSCAN.
The run is part of the Shamrock Project, a national Kappa Delta program with a focus on raising money for local and national child abuse prevention organizations.
The registration fee for the race is $15, and runners can sign up by visiting kdshamrock2015.weebly.com, or in person on the day of the event.
T-shirts are not guaranteed, but Chairman of the Shamrock Run Camden Owen said there will most likely be plenty left over to hand out.
Registration and packet pickup will be on Friday, Feb. 27 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Willow Hall. Race day registration and packet pickup will be on Saturday, Feb. 28 from 7 a.m. to 7:45 a.m.
Limited parking will be available in the PC 3 lot across from Aubie Residence Hall in The Village dorms.
