VALDOSTA — The second VSU Elementary School Shootout started with a bang Saturday night.
The Shootout, which has students from area elementary schools matching talents in three different skills on the court — dribbling, free throw shooting and 3-point shooting — with the team with the most baskets and trips to half court and back during the dribbling portion, winning. In Saturday’s first round of the Shootout, J.L. Lomax topped Pinevale to advance.
The prize for J.L. Lomax is a matchup with defending Shootout champion S.L. Mason in the semifinal round Feb. 7. Valdosta State hosts Delta State that night. The other semifinal matchup of the Shootout pits W.G. Nunn against Sallas Mahone on Feb. 5 when VSU hosts Mississippi College. The championship night of the Shootout will be Feb. 19. The participating schools receive 100 percent of the proceeds from the Shootout tickets, leaving both schools victorious.
J.L. Lomax’s winning team consisted of Nazhier Anderson, Jada Arnold, Selvina Bernard, Marcus Brinson, Demetrius Donaldson, Alacia Durant, Omarion Hankins, Tyson Hayes, Cristalynn Lee, Diamond Smith and Lakayren Williams.
Pinevale’s team included Aundretia Charles, Kaylie Degale, Kellsie Degale, Gabby Fucas, Joseph Gardner, Zoie Gilbert, Laporshia Hargrove, Jordan Hopgood, Tyequavian Logan, Octaviouse Rowe, Jeremi Sutton and Deion Williams.
