Somerville high school teacher faces sex charges

A high school teacher in Somerville was arrested Tuesday on charges of online solicitation of a minor and sexual assault of a child.
The arrest of 28-year-old Mike Vela was made at Somerville High School, where Vela is both a history teacher and a basketball coach.
According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the arrest came after an “extensive investigation,” during which a “juvenile made allegations of inappropriate and unlawful conduct with Vela.”
The charges are both felonies.
According to the sheriff’s office, Vela is in Washington County Jail with bail set at $500,000.
In a statement, the Somerville school district asked members of the community share any relevant information with law enforcement.
“Somerville ISD is cooperating fully with the law enforcement and will release information as it is released to us,” the statement says. “The safety and security of our students is our number one priority.”
