Stillwater mayor arrested on child porn charges

The village of Stillwater’s mayor has been arrested on child pornography charges.

Troopers searched the home of Ricky Nelson on Thursday morning before arresting him.

State police say the Computer Crimes Unit became aware that an IP address in Stillwater had downloaded photographs depicting child pornography.

“That seized laptop will undergo a very though forensics investigation,” said New York State Police Capt. Richard O’Brien.

Nelson, 62, is facing charges of promoting a sexual performance by a child and possessing a sexual performance by a child.

Troopers say there is no indication that village property was used, or that any of the children depicted were local.

“Future charges will be forthcoming if further images are depicted once the forensics examination is complete,” O’Brien said.

Officials at the village hall had no comment Thursday afternoon. Nelson was remanded to the Saratoga County Jail on $25,000 cash bail and is due back in court next week.

Nelson was elected mayor in March 2015. His term is scheduled to end in 2019. Right now, it’s unclear if Nelson will remain on the village board.
