Student injured in fight at East Wake High School in Wendell | #students | #parents

WENDELL, N.C. — East Wake High School was locked down on Monday after a fight on campus.

Before 11 a.m., law enforcement responded to the school at 5101 Rolesville Road in Wendell, and the campus was moved into a code red lockdown. At 1 p.m., Wake County Sheriff Gerald Baker told WRAL News the school was moved from code red into code yellow.

Video sent to WRAL News showed broken glass inside the school. Students could be heard shouting profanities.

According to Baker, school resource officers broke up a fight inside the school. One student had minor injuries and was taken home by a parent. No officers were injured.

Another student was found to be in possession of a BB gun at the school, Baker said, and disciplinary measures will be taken.

Baker said he did not know what started the fight.

A code yellow lockdown, according to the WCPSS website, is defined as, “All outdoor activities will stop and students will move into the building.”

Sky 5 flew over the scene at 12:30 p.m., where parents were waiting outside locked doors to pick up their children.

Robyn Arbelaez, who has a 10th grader at East Wake, said there have been fights at the school before, but a code red made her believe the incident was violent.

“It’s scary because of current situations that have gone on recently,” she said. “I say all my blessings when I drop her off to school every day. Because in this day and age, it’s terrifying.”
