A middle school teacher from Virginia was arrested on Friday at the border between the US and Mexico, after he was accused of having sex with a minor.
Fairfax County police say Matthew Snell, 31, of Clinton, Maryland, was arrested Friday at El Paso Airport in Texas after allegedly attempting to flee the country, Associated Press reported.
WTOP reported that US marshals detained Snell in El Paso. Fairfax County police said Snell is being returned to Virginia to bring charges.The police said worried parents approached the school on Thursday after they discovered inappropriate text messages from Snell to their child. Snell, who taught people with learning disabilities at the Thoreau Middle School in Vienna, reportedly became aware of the investigation and fled.
He faces several charges, including the fact that he grants indecent freedoms to a child in detention.
The Fairfax County Public Schools issued a statement to the parents of Thoreau Middle School stating that the school would work with law enforcement agencies “as needed”.
“FCPS is working with the police to investigate this serious matter. This is an on-going criminal investigation conducted by the Fairfax County Police Department and fully supported by the FCPS staff as and when required, “the statement said in part.
