California teen Delaney How has found a way to tie together her concern for the homeless and the environment to make a difference. She collects various types of plastic bags and turns them into mats for homeless people to sleep on. It takes approximately 500 to 700 plastic bags to make a bed that is 6 feet (1.83 m) long. How folds the bags in half, cuts off the handles and base, and cuts them into strips to be crocheted into mats.
How explained why she is passionate about the project: “It’s always been kind of hard for me to see people sitting on the streets who are homeless. I’ve always found it so amazing and uplifting to put a smile on their face, whether it’s saying hi or doing something like this and giving them mats. I just know I’m making a difference in our world. And I’m changing it whether it’s little or not, it’s still a change.”
