Two teenagers have landed behind bars in relation to a recent fire reported at North Central Park.

On Thursday, Maria Del Carmen Gonzalez, 18, and a 16-year-old girl were served with warrants charging them with arson.

The case unfolded at about 9:43 p.m. Dec. 28, when LPD park police officers identified a fire at North Central Park. During the course of the investigation, officers discovered from witnesses and social media postings that two young females had set the fire deliberately before fleeing the area on foot.

Officers said they located the “tools” used in the alleged arson and recovered them as evidence. LPD’s Criminal Investigation Division along with the Laredo Fire Department received numerous tips during the course of the investigation via the Laredo Crime Stoppers Facebook, the LPD App, and the Emergency Communications Center.

“Once properly identified, both suspects were located and interviewed on the matter. During the interviews, suspects admitted their involvement in the arson,” LPD said in a statement.

The findings of the case were presented before the District Attorney’s Office and the County Attorney’s Office, who approved the arrest of Gonzalez and the detention of the juvenile. Police would detain the juvenile on Tuesday and Gonzalez on Friday.

“The investigation continues as detectives attempt to determine whether these two individuals are involved in the multiple vandalisms at the park within the same time frame,” LPD said in statement. “We want to thank the community for the cooperation in identifying both suspects in this case. To report any suspicious activity, please call the Laredo Crime Stoppers at 727-TIPS (8477) to be eligible to receive a cash reward.”
