Youth aged 16 to 19 years old who spent more time on social media were more likely to go on frequent drinking binges.
According to Medical Xpress and California News-Times, there has been a link found between teenagers who are “heavy” social media users and alcohol. This was determined by a survey that was conducted in the UK by UCL.
The study found that youth aged 16 to 19 years old who spent more time on social media were more likely to go on frequent drinking binges. This is concerning and it was also the first study that has been able to show a strong link between the two actions. Studies like these are important because they can also highlight intervention steps that can be taken to counteract the link.
Researchers stated that this relationship can also occur over time, and it is not always something that happens immediately. This can lead parents to be more mindful about the time their older children and tweens spend on social media. The study didn’t just look at teenagers, they found that 18% of youth aged 10-15 years old who used social media, reported that they had a drink at least once a month. The number increased for every hour they spent on social media.
When it came to teenagers, the study showed that 30% of everyone who participated between the ages of 16- and 19-years old drinks at least once a week. The “magic” number for social media use was more than 4 hours.
When teenagers spend more than 4 hours a day on social media, they were more likely to overdrink than those who spend just 1 hour on social media. Researchers stated that this is still a complex concern because they are not sure the exact reason why this association exists, which can make it difficult to curb. The study may also need an updated look because of the current rise in apps like Snapchat and TikTok, which were not included the first time.
