The Role of a Board of Education Member | #Education

For some of my fellow Spartans who may be less familiar with the role a board of education member plays in our school district, I wanted to share the following link from the New Jersey School Board Association website.

Board members are elected to serve as our community representatives.  They are responsible for ensuring that the education provided to the students is the best that our Spartan community can afford and to see that the school district is run well.  Board members should not confuse the role of setting policy for our district with that of running our district. The written policies of the board provide guidance and direction to the superintendent for making decisions and taking action.  The superintendent, also known as the chief school administrator, serves as Sparta’s educational expert.  As the top education professional, our superintendent should continually evaluate and assess how policies are being implemented.  All issues on an agenda for board action are accompanied by the superintendent’s recommendation.

This is why the hiring of Sparta’s next superintendent is so important.  We need a leader who is COMMITTED to making the Sparta School District a district of distinction.  The role between our board of ed members and our superintendent is one of the most critical factors in determining how well our school system will operate moving forward.  Our board must trust, respect and have confidence in our superintendent. 

I know we are all feeling overwhelmed by the next phase of our school re-entry plans BUT with the recent selection of a superintendent search firm, our district has also begun the search for Sparta’s new superintendent.  I feel that the community should be involved in the hiring process.  I would like to see our school district host a public forum for residents to attend either in person or online.  Our community should have a voice and share what is important to them in our next educational leader.  I would also support a forum for principals, vice principals, teachers, staff, administrators and parent-teacher groups, etc.  Collecting all of this feedback would be very helpful and would greatly assist in the hiring process. We need to find the right fit for the Sparta school district.  This decision is too important for us to ignore!!!!
