My daughters are counting down the days until school starts, one with excitement and the other with dread. I’m continually amazed by how different siblings can be. Every parent I know, however, seems to be on the same page about the start of school. I’ll let you guess what page that is.
A new school year brings new opportunity and a fresh start. It also requires some preparation and planning.
If you could use some information and guidance about after-school activities, before or after-school care options and school supply and uniform shopping, there are a few events coming up that you’ll want to attend.
Treasure Coast Square Back to School Bash: If you’re planning on taking advantage of tax-free weekend to get some school shopping done, you also should check out this event noon to 4 p.m. Saturday in the J.C. Penney courtyard of the mall, 3174 S.W. Federal Highway in Jensen Beach. The event will feature free bungie rides, live entertainment by local dance and music schools, crafts, video game demos and more.
Vendors will be on hand with information about extracurricular activities, and the Martin County Sheriff’s Office will be on site with anti-bullying information. The first 100 attendees will receive a free goody bag.
Back to School Fair at Trinity United Methodist Church: If you know a family struggling to afford school supplies this year, share this opportunity with them. Trinity United Methodist Church at 2221 N.E. Savannah Road in Jensen Beach will host its annual Back to School Fair 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday andwill give away 400 pre-kindergarten through high school backpacks filled with supplies for children in need. They also will be offering haircuts and lunch at no cost.
It is recommended families arrive at least an hour early to register to guarantee a spot. Any child receiving a backpack must be present. Kudos to the congregation and all involved for providing for our neighbors in need in such a kind and generous way.
Fall Activities Showcase at Boundless Gymnastics: If you are overwhelmed by the sheer variety and amount of youth sports, music and arts programs in Martin County, this free event noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 13 can help you choose the right after-school activity for your child. Located at 3240 S.W. 42nd Ave. in Palm City and cohosted by Hulafrog, the showcase will have plenty of hands on fun, including bounce houses, trampolines and face painting to keep your kids occupied while you check out the vendors.
