Sir, Your report (“Face our sins with museum of colonialism, urges historian”, Sep 16) and leading article (“Past Imperfect”) omitted to mention that William Dalrymple’s idea of consigning imperial statues to a special museum was strongly opposed by the only two Indian members of the panel at the Jaipur Literature Festival: the Bharatiya Janata Party MP Swapan Dasgupta and me. We had several reasons for this, among them that the British generals that Dalrymple singled out for war crimes were responding to even more horrendous massacres by the mutineers of 1857. There is no parallel here with Nazi genocide in the Holocaust, especially as India’s population quadrupled under a mostly benevolent Raj.
