1. Vaccines, variants mark second year of pandemic

Year two of the COVID-19 pandemic saw the three approved vaccines – BioNTech Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson – become widely available to most age groups.

But the emergence of variants of the virus, combined with a significant amount of vaccine hesitancy among individuals, has left the worldwide battle with COVID at a standstill.

2021 began with a sharp reduction in state-issued mandates on social distancing and mask use across Michigan. Zoom calls were replaced with in-person meetings, and many community events returned from their year-long hiatus as people sought to return to some semblance of normalcy over the spring and summer.

But the emergence of the Omicron variant and an ongoing spike in overall cases at the local, state and national level led to many last-minute alterations to people’s holiday plans.
