WEST CHESTER — A Chester County day care owner accused of rape and child molestation is on trial now in a case involving three victims of crimes the district attorney says happened in more than 10 years ago.

James Anthony Battista, 71, of Drexel Hill, owned and operated a day care in his home near West Grove. The Little Friends Daycare, owned by Battista and his wife, came under police investigation in 2010 and closed.

The jury trial began Monday in Chester County’s Court of Common Pleas before Judge Jeffrey Somer.

Battista is charged with 12 counts of five different crimes; rape of a child, aggravated indecent assault of a child under 13, contact with a minor/sexual offenses, endangering child welfare, and indecent assault of a child under 13.

The victims were girls who attended the day care when they were 3 and 4 years old, and came forward as teenagers, the district attorney said. The assaults reportedly occurred over a three-year period, from 2006 to 2009.
