Uncle charged with child abuse in Laurel girl’s 2004 death

The uncle of a 3-year-old girl has been charged with child abuse in her 2004 death.

The Jones County Sheriff’s Department charged Sandy Alexander Beasley this week in the February 2004 death of Cassidy Sierra Whited.

Whited was found drowned in a pond near Beasley’s home. She was naked and officials said at the time she had been sexually assaulted.

A news release from the department says Beasley, who has been jailed on drug charges since April, admitted that he had been partying the night before Whited’s death. Beasley was supposed to be watching Whited when she died.

A neighbor helping to search for Whited found her in the pond northeast of Laurel.

Records show Beasley remains in the Jones County jail with bail set at $130,000.
