Police are alerting the public about a 50-year-old Vancouver art teacher who has been charged with sexually assaulting a nine-year-old girl.

Police say an art student was assaulted in a home near East 64th Avenue and Prince Edward Street on March 22.

Shao Zhai Chen, who teaches art classes out of his home, faces one count each of sexual assault, sexual interference and invitation to sexual touching.

“This is a very disturbing incident where a child was left under the care of an adult and that adult allegedly took advantage of her,” said VPD spokesperson Const. Tania Visintin.

“Investigators are concerned there may be other children that have attended Chen’s residence and could have more information or be of assistance to this investigation.”

Chen, who is described as a 5-foot-8 Asian man with black and white hair, has been released from custody with a condition that he have no contact with children under 16 unless it’s in the presence of their parents or another adult approved of by a bail supervisor.

Anyone with information is asked to call VPD investigators at 604-717-0604.
