One of the Catholic Church’s most high-ranking officials has been forgiven by the Vatican for multiple cases of historical child abuse allegations that have been brought against him.The Vatican Finance Chief and aide to The Pope, Cardinal George Pell has been accused of continued sexual assault of 15 children, with 10 of them filing complaints with the police and the Catholic Church.
Cardinal Pell was interviewed by Australian police over the child rape accusations, but say they are “unsure” about whether to move forward with the cases after Australia’s Director of Public Prosecutions warned them to “back off” and drop the charges. Many believe that Pell, who is Australia’s most senior Catholic cleric is being “protected by The Pope” due to his high profile position within the church.According to KCOA, Pell is also facing a new grassroots campaign to help victims travel to Rome to watch Pell give evidence which by itself puts pressure on the Royal Commission, Pell, and the Vatican to do the right thing. At least 15 survivors and their supporters will be going to Rome as they have already raised the needed funds via a grassroots campaign. The campaign has been helped by some high-profile supporters such as the below video by comedian Tim Minchin.
A statement released by Victoria Police said; “Victoria Police can confirm that it has received advice relating to a current investigation into historical sexual assault allegations,””Detectives from Taskforce Sano will now take time to consider that advice.” “As with any investigation, it will be a decision for Victoria Police as to whether charges are laid.”Daily Mail reports: Pell was a priest in the Ballarat diocese before becoming the Archbishop of Melbourne and then Sydney ahead of being hand-picked in 2014 by Pope Francis to make the church’s finances more transparent. The claims against him came just months after Pell admitted he “mucked up” in dealing with pedophile priests in Victoria state in the 1970s while giving evidence to an Australian inquiry into institutional responses to child sex abuse.
He has appeared before the long-running royal commission three times, once in person and twice via video-link.Earlier this week, a new book, “Cardinal: The Rise and Fall of George Pell”, was published with fresh details on allegations against him, and new information claiming a cover-up within the Catholic Church.Pell, who has repeatedly denied all the accusations and suggested a conspiracy against him, called the book “an exercise in character assassination”.”Each and every allegation of abuse and cover up against him is false,” said a statement from his Rome office on Monday.
