Victim of domestic shooting identified as former police officer

INDIAN ROCKS BEACH (FOX 13) – A former St. Petersburg police officer has been identified as the victim of an apparent domestic violence shooting on Saturday.

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, John Joseph Rush, 45, was shot at 2601 1st Street in Indian Rocks Beach around 11:00 p.m. Saturday.

Rush was an officer in the forensic unit at the St. Petersburg Police Department, according to police spokesperson Yolanda Fernandez.

Rush retired in 2005 due to an injury, family members said, and he went to work for the county medical examiner’s officer.

Authorities say Rush and his ex-wife were arguing in their home prior to the shooting on Saturday.

According to Rush’s family, he and his ex-wife, Cara Ryan, had a complicated relationship. The pair divorced in 2003, but began dating and living together once again. In recent months, the relationship was not going well, according to Rush’s family, and he moved out of the house in February.

Property records show that Ryan, a media production teacher at Clearwater High School, owned the home.

Family members say Rush was in the process of renting a new apartment in St. Pete Beach, and it is unclear why he returned to the home on Saturday night.

Ryan has not been charged in the shooting. An investigation is ongoing.
