Woman arrested on charges of DWI, child abuse after Thanksgiving crash

Santa Fe County deputies say they arrested a 26-year-old woman who crashed through a guard barrier on Interstate 25 while driving drunk on Thanksgiving Day with a 7-year-old relative in the vehicle.

Neither Kathryn Byrant, the driver, nor her young relative were injured in the crash. Deputies arrested Bryant of Rio Rancho on a charge of child abuse, aggravated drunken driving and careless driving.

Deputies first responded to the scene after receiving reports of a sedan speeding and swerving on northbound Interstate 25 near the N.M. 599 exit. Byrant, deputies said, apparently lost control and drove through a guardrail at about 5:45 p.m. Thursday.

Byrant appeared drunk, deputies said, but she refused to take a sobriety test. Deputies didn’t report the case to the New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department, but rather called the child’s mother, who came by to pick up the child. Byrant was then arrested and booked into the Santa Fe County jail. She has since been released on a 2,500 unsecured bond.
